Hello! My name is Gabi Greenberg. I'm from Highland Park, Illinois. Currently, I am a freshman at Stanford University planning on majoring in Human Biology with a minor in Mathematics.
So let me begin by sharing a little about myself in relation to FACE AIDS. My fight against HIV/AIDS sparked from an academic approach. Having studied research on HIV drug and gene therapy, I have become fascinated with the process of retroviral replication and the future possibilities to provide an effective, affordable treatment and functional cure. However, my passion for FACE AIDS reaches beyond this biological basis. Affecting the globe socially, politically, and biologically, the AIDS pandemic produces various challenges to global health and social justice.
As a rider this summer, I must confess a once hidden secret. A year ago, I was terrified of bike riding. Only after seeing 10,000 bikes on Stanford's campus did I gain enough courage to bike again. As a major turning point in my life, I slowly fell back in love with biking last summer. It's a rush to push past my previous limitations. Moreover, I view this cross-country bike ride as a means to connect with the patients, families, advocates, and physicians confronting HIV/AIDS. It's a fight, and I am awe-struck at their strength and commitment. Thus, I am so fortunate to not only have the opportunity to conquer my prior life fear but, more importantly, to share the mission of FACE AIDS in hopes of one day conquering the disease.
I truly believe in the drive and power of student leaders to make a significant impact. In addition to participating in the Ride Against AIDS, I will also serve as the communication coordinator for this year's Bay Area Ride, a 15- or 50-mile ride for residents of the California Bay Area led by Stanford FACE AIDS. This summer, I look forward to rallying support across the country, knowing we all have the power to make a difference in global health. Whether listening to the global challenges through our public presentations, tracking our blog, or investing in the cause, there are numerous ways to positively impact the fight against AIDS!
