Apply for IMPACT Global AIDS!

Millions of people worldwide are dying of AIDS, even though medication is inexpensive and prevention tools are available. Why? In part, because the U.S. and other wealthy governments are backtracking on promises made to fully fund global AIDS programs. We must push back, and ensure that everyone worldwide, regardless of where they were born, has access to life-saving AIDS prevention, treatment and care. Want to learn how? Apply to attend IMPACT Global AIDS (Institute for Mobilization and Promoting Action in our Communities Together), a training and campaign strategy session for people living in the United States who want to organize their communities to fight AIDS by pressuring our leaders. IMPACT Global AIDS (Institute for Mobilizing and Promoting Action in our Communities Together) February 19-22, 2010 Washington, DC Apply online at www.healthgap.org/impact2010. Applications are due by January 31st. The training/strategy session (including dorm-style housing and all meals) is FREE as long as you can get yourself to DC. We do have a limited number of travel scholarships. For information, contact Kaytee Riek, Health GAP's Director of Organizing, at kaytee@healthgap.org. And because attending a training or strategy session rarely changes policy, participants in the training will campaign together for a year, with the support of Health GAP and other participants, in their communities to ensure the U.S. government fully funds global AIDS. People living with HIV have a right to treatment, and we can organize to make that a reality. If you have more questions, you can see a list of frequently asked questions at www.healthgap.org/impact2010/faq.htm. Or email Kaytee at kaytee@healthgap.org. Read more...

We must take action. Our help is urgently needed. We are thrilled to announce that Sterling Stamos, a private investment firm dedicated to philanthropy and public service, has pledged to match one to one all funds raised by FACE AIDS chapters and friends for Partners In Health's Haiti earthquake relief effort up to $50,000. Please help us enable Partners In Health to provide much needed relief and rebuilding in Haiti by making a contribution here: http://act.pih.org/page/outreach/view/haitiearthquake/faceaids. Tulane Chapter Highlighted in Campus Newspaper for WAD

The Tulane chapter of FACE AIDS hosted its annual FACE AIDS Week Nov. 30 to Dec. 3. The week included events designed to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic in both the United States and Africa. “Our mission is to inspire and mobilize students to fight AIDS in Africa,” chapter leader Danielle Levy said. “Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day, so we always try to hold our week around that time.” The week’s events included a screening of the film “A Closer Walk,” free HIV testing, an African dance class Wednesday and an honors roundtable. The speakers scheduled to speak Tuesday about living with AIDS canceled because of the cold and rainy weather’s potential effect on their condition. Several panels of the AIDS memorial quilt were on display all week in the Kendall-Cram ballroom of the Lavin-Bernick Center. A national AIDS organization began sewing the quilt in 1987 and now features more than 40,000 12’ by 12’ panels. The group also helped promote the HIV-AIDS Music Project, a music festival at the Howlin’ Wolf that raised funds for local AIDS organizations. One of the main ways the group raises money is by selling pins made by Africans who are affected by AIDS. The $5 donation is sent to the Partners in Health Clinic in Rwanda, which works to provide all types of healthcare, including AIDS treatment. “With every pin is the pin maker’s story,” Levy said. “You see their face and read a little bit of their story. It brings the epidemic closer to home.” Members of FACE AIDS said they joined the organization to help raise awareness of an issue that is important to them. “I’ve been involved since freshman year,” fundraising chair Heather Farb said. “I got started because I knew the girl who started the club. I just really liked the cause.” FACE AIDS educator Ali Doppelt said the organization works to inform students about the extent of the epidemic. “We try to give people information about not only New Orleans, but about the world, so they know where their money is going,” Doppelt said. Congressman Howard Berman Stands in Solidarity with FACE AIDS

Congressman Howard...

To demonstrate solidarity with HIV/AIDS victims worldwide, this year Congressman Berman wore a commemorative pin distributed by the California-based non-profit organization FACE AIDS, which has student chapters across the United States and works with Partners in Health to help provide free health care for HIV-affected communities in Africa. The pins are made by HIV-affected Rwandan women and children; profits from their sales provide startup capital for sustainable small businesses.
